Alain Rouschmeyer: Mapping Human Stories Through Space

mars 2025

publication

Alain Rouschmeyer is a French artist who moves fluidly between the disciplines of painting, drawing, and architecture. His art is rooted in the human form—not as an isolated subject, but as something that exists in constant dialogue with space. With a background in architecture, Rouschmeyer approaches his compositions with a deep awareness of structure and framing. His recurring theme, Chemin Faisant (or Crossroad), reflects his ongoing interest in human posture and movement through everyday environments. He sketches often in real time, observing how people inhabit space, how paths intersect, and how simple gestures carry emotional weight. There’s a quiet poetry in his work…

In many of his pieces, Rouschmeyer suggests movement through subtle sketches of postures different from those depicted in the painting. This technique adds a dynamic quality to his work, prompting viewers to reflect on the relationship between the static image and the potential for motion. It invites a deeper engagement, encouraging the audience to question their perceptions and emotional responses to the composition.

One of Rouschmeyer’s recent works, Blue Zone (2024), is an acrylic on canvas that measures 120 x 80 cm. The painting offers a unique lens into a familiar yet transformed environment—the village square during a summer when it was adorned with a new, obliquely rhythmic…

ALAIN ROUSCHMEYER – When Painting Rises Again

ALAIN ROUSCHMEYER – PAINTING RESURFACES

Even though painting has always been part of his life, Alain Rouschmeyer has only recently begun to share his work publicly. Son of an artist-architect father and a musician mother, this architect, interior designer, and designer based on the western shore of Lake Annecy kept this passion mostly to himself for years. Yet pencils and brushes were his true companions long before he entered the Beaux-Arts in Metz.
“I took a break during my teenage years, out of frustration. I was entering a lot of drawing contests and kept losing – people would say I hadn’t done the work myself, that it must have been my father!”

After Metz came the Decorative Arts School in Strasbourg.
“There were 300 or 400 candidates for the entrance exam, which lasted a week, and only 30 were accepted! It was wild – it was the 1970s. A good 50% of the candidates had failed dental school or law school. They’d say, ‘Arts déco is easy, I’ll just throw on a scarf and show up!’ But it was actually a rather academic school, with teachers who had a very traditional approach – the complete opposite of what we see today!”

A STUDIO WITH A VIEW OF THE LAKE

Despite his passion for painting, Alain Rouschmeyer chose a career in interior architecture. Years later, he completed his training at the National School of Architecture in Lyon. But more recently, disillusionment set in:
“For me, architecture should bring something new to the world of construction. I’m a little disappointed. I feel constrained — by regulations, by the conservatism of decision-makers.”

So maybe it was time to let the painter take up more space.
Especially since both practices have a key element in common: a deep love of drawing.
“Sketching has always been a guiding thread in my work. I believe a good project starts with the hand, not a tablet.”
What was once a personal satisfaction and well-being ritual has become a second calling. His studio in Bredannaz, overlooking the lake, gradually came to life.

"I ALWAYS CARRY A SKETCHBOOK WITH ME"

Artist, architect, and urban sketcher, Alain Rouschmeyer has finally come to terms with “the coexistence of [his] different skills.”
His playground? Figurative art and acrylic paint.
“I do paint a bit in oil, but I tend to come back to acrylic – it suits my pace better.”
Portraits, still lifes, scenes from everyday life... his themes are many.
As are his sources of inspiration:
“It’s quite strange. Sometimes I’m just looking out the window and a couple walking by catches my eye. Or it might be the posture or outfit of a woman on the square in Duingt, where I often take walks. I’m a homebody, I don’t travel, and I’m a bit like Churchill: ‘No sport!’”

Beyond exhibitions (at the latest of which he won two awards!), he also shares his work online:
“I no longer believe in galleries. I think they’ve become more of a Sunday stroll than a cultural experience.”
The choice seems wise — with one small twist:
“My paintings are in the United States, Austria, Greece, the Canary Islands, Germany, Italy, Sweden, Norway… But in France? Not a single one!”

Since 2022, the former student of François Cacheux has been among a handful of Haute-Savoie artists listed by the i-CAC (an independent French art rating index).
“I never saw the point before, but it does open doors — even if it can scare off some buyers. And then, I used to set my own prices, until I realized my rating was actually higher. Nice surprise!”

In the end, Alain Rouschmeyer was right to let time do its work.
“It’s kind of funny – when I was a student or a young architect, I used to tell myself that if I ever became an artist, I’d probably be a sculptor. I pictured myself with a welding torch and chunks of metal. Or I imagined myself drawing houses — I liked drawing straight lines.
Now I paint, and I draw a lot of people... I was completely wrong!” ■

ALAIN ROUSCHMEYER – Painter

Creation has always drawn Alain Rouschmeyer in.
He grew up alongside an architect father and a musician mother — both passionate about the arts, and both passing on that creative spark. From a very young age, Alain found freedom and emotion in drawing and painting. It quickly became his world, and he immersed himself in it more and more, entering competitions before studying at the Beaux-Arts in Metz, and later at the School of Decorative Arts in Strasbourg. Following in his father’s footsteps, he also studied architecture and interior design.

From the beginning, his mind has been shaping and reshaping, aligning with perspectives and forms to rethink spaces — a skill that naturally seeps into his paintings.
Over time, Alain connected with many fellow artists, and gradually began to give more space to his pull toward painting. He now shares his vision of the world through a personal technique.
Each work begins with a sketch, a vision of a place full of life or emotion. The artist describes his inspiration as follows:
“I’m drawn to a place and the way it is occupied. The posture people take in relation to it — that inspires me. When I think architecturally, I design a house based on the way people live. That connection has always fascinated me — the pleasure of staging someone within a space. The relationship between people and their environment is often where my ideas come from.”

So Alain never goes anywhere without his sketchbook and pencils. He walks, lets his eyes wander, and keeps his heart open to welcome a new spark of inspiration.
He sketches quickly, then turns to painting with acrylic — a medium whose spontaneity echoes the initial gesture of creation.
Places leave traces on people, and each person leaves a mark on the places they pass through. It’s a cycle filled with feeling and resonance — vibrations that Alain Rouschmeyer perceives. It’s a philosophy of life, a way to savor the present moment by capturing it forever on canvas.

The artist reveals his sensitivity and his deep connection with the world around him. Ever curious, he seeks to share his stories, memories, and visions through a form of positive figurative art. His paintings are colorful and engaging, offering a relatively modern take on figuration — dusting off old notions of what figurative work can be.

Alain Rouschmeyer brings an enchanted gaze to the world.
He is drawn to the poetry of everyday life — to those small moments of peace and joy — and he translates them into painting, for us to receive and feel in turn.

Alain Rouschmeyer studied at the Beaux-Arts in Metz, then at the School of Decorative Arts in Strasbourg.
An interior architect, then architect, drawing and sketching gradually became his primary means of expression.
Figurative art remains at the heart of his painting, preserving the essence of sketching to better capture fleeting moments and emotion.

He enjoys working with the poetry of the present — the visual impression of a moment stolen and shared with a surface that becomes a partner in framing the scene.
